As the Ondo State Independent Electoral Commission (ODIEC) finalizes preparations for the forthcoming January 18, 2025, Local Government Elections, I therefore wish to implore all political parties, candidates, and their supporters regarding the critical need to maintain a peaceful electoral process devoid of violence and thuggery just like the Nov. 16 Gubernatorial election.
Chris Kwaja, a professor and country director at the United States Institute of Peace and a board member of civil society organisation, Yiaga Africa told premium times on the 17th of November, 2024 that Ondo State has an history of peaceful election compared to other states in Nigeria. His statement is a testament to the charismatic and humane nature of the Governor of the State, Dr. Lucky Orimisan Aiyedatiwa who is poised on delivering dividends of democracy whilst ensuring a very peaceful political atmosphere where all political parties in the state can meaningfully contribute to the development of the state.
ODIEC, under the leadership of its Chairman, Dr. Joseph Aremo, has demonstrated commitment to ensuring free, fair, credible, and transparent elections. The Commission has successfully recruited and trained ad-hoc staff and has distributed non-sensitive election materials to the ODIEC offices across all 18 local government areas. It has also collaborated with key stakeholders and security agencies to guarantee the safety of election materials and participants.
While acknowledging the efforts of ODIEC, I urge the leadership of all 18 registered political parties in Ondo State to take responsibility for ensuring their candidates, members, and supporters adhere strictly to the principles of peaceful engagement. Elections are a cornerstone of democracy, and it is imperative that we conduct ourselves in a manner that reflects the values of mutual respect, tolerance, and fairness.
All political parties must discourage any form of violence, thuggery, or intimidation before, during, and after the election. Parties must adhere to the electoral guidelines and members must be advised on the importance of complying with ODIEC’s rules and regulations.
Political campaigns and other related activities should focus on issue-based engagement rather than inflammatory rhetoric or actions that could incite unrest. I charge all Political parties to cooperate with security agencies to ensure the safety of voters, electoral officials, and election materials.
Finally, I join ODIEC in calling on the electorate to come out en masse on Election Day to exercise their franchise peacefully. Let us work together to ensure that Ondo State sets a commendable example of democratic maturity and responsible governance.
